Language & Literacy
Speaking & Listening: Children are encouraged to ask and answer questions, express their opinions, share their ideas and discuss stories as well as their reading books.
Reading & Phonics: Phonics is taught on a daily basis. Children learn sounds and word-building skills. They read every day in class. They are encouraged to use their phonic knowledge to read unfamiliar words and to read with expression. Guided reading will e done during literacy lessons where they are taught different strategies to help them with reading. They should also be exposed to books and stories at home.
Writing and Handwriting: Our aim is to help them become independent writers. They learn spellings at home every week and are tested every Friday. They learn different forms of writing eg instructional texts and fairy tales. They are encouraged to use a wider range of vocabulary, sentence openers and connectives to enhance their writing. They will be encouraged to present their writing neatly and to use joined up writing.

Science
Health and Growth: children learn that babies grow into children and then into adults. They learn that babies need to be cared for by grown ups and that they become more independent as they grow older. They also learn that we need to exercise and eat a balanced diet.
Electricity: children learn that electricity is important to modern life, but that we must use it safely. They also learn to make a simple circuit to light a bulb.
History & Geography
Italy and France: children learn about life in these countries and compare to their own life in Gibraltar.
The Great Fire of London: they learn about the Great Fire, how Londoners dealt with it and what lessons were learnt from this event. They learn about first hand witnesses through Samuel Pepys’s diary.
ICT
Children learn how to log on and off the computer. They learn that computers can be used for very different purposes. They learn how to use the keyboard in word processing and use PAINT to design their own Christmas card. They use the internet for historical geographical and literacy research.
Art & Design
Children learn about Claude Monet and Impressionism and paint in a Impressionist Style. They learn about Venice and the annual carnival and make their own Venetian mask.
Physical Education
Children develop their skills in handling balls, beanbags and other small apparatus. They learn to balance on different parts of their bodies, both on the floor and on large apparatus.
Religious Education
Children learn about harvest festivals and giving thanks to God for our food,. They also learn about journeys and Joseph and Mary’s journey to Bethlehem.
